As a result of over 20 years in practice and having mentored more than 15 candidate attorneys over those years, Melanie is well equipped in the art of training the final year law students and candidate attorneys. It is a known fact that young attorneys receive proper training in all aspect of the Law, but not nearly enough training or mentoring in the business side of a legal practice.

It is worth noting that every law practice is first and foremost a business and without proper business skills, many young attorneys fall out of the system. It does not matter how well you faired at the exams, without some guidance on how best to understand the running of a business, most young attorneys get frustrated and disillusioned.

Melanie offers training to final year law students and young attorneys on all aspects of business: from the compilation of a budget and targets to the drafting of a business plan. Melanie will help you to understand the marketing of yourself and your practice and how best to get a targeted Marketing Plan put together. You will be skilled in business writing, drafting of documents and agreements as well as how to excel within your candidacy to avoid feeling under appreciated.

Melanie’s training sessions are presented in a very lively, comfortable and understandable manner and she is known to always illustrate the examples with meticulous care. Every training session attended will be accompanied by a summary of the presentation notes as well an attendance certificate.

Most training sessions will be hosted via Zoom or MS Teams and prospective attendees should register for a session via the website link and if a fee is raised, then payment will occur via the payment link on the site.

WRITING A GOOD PRACTIAL BUSINESS PLAN

Intended outcomes:

  • To understand how one fits into a legal practice and what is meant with “business plan” within the confines of an office.
  • To understand that a business plan is not just a document but a living goal creator which will assist you in making the necessary impression that you are seeking within the practice.
  • How not to feel overwhelmed when considering your short term business goals and how to best present these to your principal.
  • How to ensure that you execute your business plan.

BUSINESS WRITING SKILLS

Intended outcomes:

  • To be able to fully construct a letter with efficiency and confidence;
  • How to write proper business emails;
  • How to structure an agreement and what to do with a template Officer within the organisation or office.

  • A copy of the presentation notes.

HOW TO PLAN YOUR MARKETING STRATEGY AND WRITING A MARKETING PLAN

Intended outcomes:

  • How to identify the client base you wish to target;
  • How to decide on a marketing strategy which works;
  • How to identify which strategy suits your personality best;
  • How to plan the conversion of your marketing efforts and spend;
  • How to retain your client base once converted;
  • How to stand out in the crowd of young attorneys in order to get noticed by your principals.

  • A copy of the course notes;
  • An opportunity to arrange a follow up appointment to discuss the marketing plan you have drafted.

PRACTICE ADMINISTRATION – PRACTICAL GUIDE AND TIPS
